The U.S. government tells us there's a trillion dollars in minerals value in Afghanistan. Alaska pays for all its social programs through a severance tax on petroleum. Tha annualvalue of extracted natural resources and of the earth under our feet is enough to meet every national budget combined.

Alanna Hartzok will address specificsocial justice and environmental mattersfrom the perspective of The Commons. What results from socializing the annual value of gifts of nature,and simultaneously liberating labor and business from extra layers of taxation and regulation.

Alanna is Co-Director of Earth Rights Institute, a civil sociaety organiztion working for economic justice and peaceful resolution of conflicts. Her 2001 E.F. Schumacher Lecture was published as Democracy, Earth Rights and the Next Economy. Her articles are referenced in the literature of the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), in a recent issue of the Federal Resrve Bank of St. Louis Review, in Dialogues, a publication of the Canada West Foundation, in David Roodman's Worldwatch Institute book, The Natural Wealth of Nations, and in Creating a sustainable World, an anthology edited by Trent Schroyler and Tom Grolodik.
