Henry George enjoyed both bicycling (in the 1890s while in New York City) and sailing (all his life). He shipped out on a 'round the world merchantman at age 16, and sailed San Francisco Bay recreationally.
Because both bicycling and and boating are fun, and because we perceive elegant and instructive themes in both activities, the Henry George Historical Society sponsors a Bicycle Club and a Sailing Club. We invite you to join us in both these activities
What's up with bicycling?
Wheels spin around and so does the earth. Bicycles are a great mode of transportation: they are relatively clean, convey an appreciation for energy required to travel, and they're human scale in speed. Similarly, the earth is relatively clean, is a model of equilibrium, and is everyone's home (just the right speed through the universe).
Come along with us on a monthly outing. Sometimes it's a contribution to Critical Mass, other times it's a bike and picnic to see the San Francisco Mime Troupe, or perhaps it's simply a jaunt to Golden Gate Park or some other part of the city. Look for this month's ride notice on the right.
Land Ho! with sailing
It's not always sailing. Sometimes we kayak. Or row. Or surf. Or white-water raft. In any event, we're water friendly. And we love making philosophical connec- tions on the water. Come along on our monthly water outing and . . . philosophize.
To get you started with philosophizing, Georgist -style, imagine yourself sailing, then try this on: The sailing boat represents human made stuff, the sailor represents humans working, and the water and wind are gifts of nature. Who owns the stuff somebody makes? Who owns the skills and talents of the sailor? And who owns the wind and ocean?
Check out which way we're leaning, starboard or port, in the column to the right.
